Welcome to the July newsletter from Mackintosh Gin! June was a very exciting month for us with lots going on and July looks set to be just as busy and exciting!
We exhibited at the Junipalooza event at the start of June which was absolutely fantastic. The event saw 3300 guests split over 3 sessions through the doors and it honestly felt like we saw most of them at our stand! The event, which was held at the Tobacco dock venue in London is seen as THE gin event of the year, and after exhibiting at it we can see why. We were in the newcomers’ zone which had an amazing atmosphere for the entire weekend, safe to say we loved every minute of it and cannot wait to exhibit at the event again.
We took a team of 3 with us to the event that included Jim, eldest daughter Steph and partner Dave. Having Steph and Dave help out really made the weekend a lot easier than it would have been.
During the weekend we caught up with lots of our ginpals and made lots of new ones! The most enjoyable part of being on this gin journey is meeting other gin fans, it really is the driving force for what we do and exhibiting at Junipalooza was a dream come true for us. It was even more special because we were there on World Gin Day and we were able to celebrate with lots of our gin pals!
We found out last week that we have been shortlisted as finalists in two categories of the Scottish Gin Awards which is really exciting for us. We have been shortlisted for London Dry Gin of the Year and for Best Marketing Campaign!
This past weekend we had the entire team together as we have been experimenting on our new releases. We had been experimenting with our Navy Strength gin and trying to agree on what strength this will be, we sampled at 57, 58, 59 and 60% ABV and have agreed that 59% ABV will be the strength when it launches. At this strength the grapefruit is really prominant, and in cocktails the gin really shines through. We cannot wait to release this as it is an amazing gin for cocktails.
We have also been working on a gin based liqueur which we hope to release later this year. We're using tropical fruits which taste amazing together and we're trialling 4 different sugars to determine the final recipe. We're really excited to release a liqueur as we get a lot of emails enquiring about them. It will be 20% ABV and will be amazing when paired with bubbles!
To cater for those who are looking for a full strength flavoured gin we are also working on an Old Tom gin. For this one we are using local produce, which being based in Angus means we are spoilt for choice!
As previously mentioned our inaugural 2019 cocktail competition launches today. We are holding 4 rounds in Dundee, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh throughout September with an overall final in November to determine the cocktail we will promote as our signature serve in 2020. To kick off the competition we held a trade tasting session last night at the Taproom at 71 Brewing in Dundee for local bartenders which was great fun. It allowed us to showcase our gin to them and explain the reason for the competition.
In a couple of months, the inaugural International Scottish Gin Day launches on Saturday the 3rd August. The event is an international celebration of all things Scottish Gin. Established by the guys behind The Gin Cooperative, the day brings together Gin makers and brands, whose Gins are distilled, rectified or cold compounded in Scotland and a selection of global bars, retailers and gin drinkers, to celebrate the story of Scottish Gin.
We are in talks just now for doing a sponsored bar/take over event in Edinburgh on the evening of the 3rd August. We are really excited for this and hope to announce details later this week once everything has been confirmed. We also have the prestigious Clumsies Bar in Athens including us in their special Scottish Gin Menu on the day with their event to promote the day.
The last week in June (24th to 30th) was known as Negroni Week, a celebration of the Negroni cocktail presented by Campari and Imbibe Magazine. The celebration encourages bars & venues to participate, and for every Negroni purchased in participating venues throughout the week a donation is made to one of the official charity partners.
We played our part by visiting lots of our favourite bars during the week and enjoyed a Negroni with ginpals in each one.
The Negroni is such an easy cocktail to make, we make ours the following way:
25ml Mackintosh Gin
25ml Sweet Vermouth
Orange peel or wedge to Garnish
Pour the Gin, Campari and Sweet Vermouth directly onto a large ice cube in an old fashioned glass, stir, garnish and enjoy!
We've had a few enquiries asking about our Crowdfunding campaign, we hope to announce this later this month and kick it off at the start of August. Keep an eye on our social media platforms for details of when it launches.
Keep an eye on our social media channels for further updates, cocktails and where & when we will be offering some tastings of our gin!
Please enjoy Mackintosh Gin responsibly.
