April Newsletter

Welcome to the April newsletter from Mackintosh Gin! We had a busy month in March and no sign of things slowing down in April!

We’re now shipping Batch 3, which was needed quicker than expected due to Batch 2 being sent out as soon as it was distilled, bottled and labelled. Most of Batch 2 was sent to The Juniper Club where it was gin of the month for February, this was a fantastic opportunity for us, we got a lot of feedback following this and have definitely made some new gin pals.

We did however keep some stock back to take to Glasgow for The Gin To My Tonic Show. This was an excellent event, from both an exhibitor and a consumer point of view. It is the biggest event we have attended to date and one that we are excited about returning to in the future. We met up with lots (and lots!) of gin pals which was fantastic, we also made lots of new ones which means a lot to us. We were hosted by the Crafty Connoisseur team along with Culpepper Tonic, Dundee Gin and Badachro Gin, it was a real gin family affair!

We’re starting to fill up our diary with tasting events and other festival experiences, all of which we are really excited about. However, we are very excited to announce that we will be exhibiting at Junipalooza at the Tobacco dock venue in London in June! This event is seen as THE gin event to be at and we are very honoured to be one of the lucky ones to feature in the newcomers’ zone. If you’re planning on going to this festival then come and say hi, we would love to see you there!

We featured in a couple of competitions last month which was exciting for us to be part of. The Gin Cooperative were running their monthly 5 Scottish Gins competition and we were part of the line-up, this was an amazing prize that featured some fantastic gins. The second competition to feature us was run by Ginteresting Times. We loved the review Dan did for us and have been following his blog for a while now. We can’t get enough of the fantastic image he took of our gin in front of his fantastic gin wall!

As we reported last month, we’re in discussions with a couple of buyers from North America and Canada, which are looking promising! It’s going to take a little while longer than anticipated to get our gin on the shelves over there, but we’re working on it. The hoops we have to jump through are immense (and expensive!), but we will still aim for the end of the year. Watch this space!

We reported last month that we may be running a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for our own still. We’re still looking at this and working on the requirements & cost but hope to run the campaign over the summer and have the still in place by the end of the year. We love distilling our gin at Distillutions in Arbroath as it has a real community feel to it. Lewis, who owns and runs the distillery is an amazing distiller and without him we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have in such a short time. Following their visit with us when we bottled Batch 2, The Gin Cooperative have run a feature on Distillutions, which is a fantastic read and can be found here.

Our own still is essential for us if we’re exporting to the USA and Canada but it will also allow us to make more expressions of our gin. One of the planned expressions is a Navy Strength Mackintosh Gin which will be one of the rewards for our crowdfunders. This will be an amazing cocktail gin and will let the gin shine through when mixed with our spirits. We love gin cocktails and we love spending time in some of the fantastic cocktail bars in Scotland, so we are also going to release a bartender’s edition of our gin. There’s no chance of us collaborating with some of our favourite bartenders without upsetting others so we are going to run a cocktail competition to decide the winners! There will be 4 rounds, in Dundee, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh with a winner from each round. All 4 winners will spend time with us next year developing and making a limited edition 2020 bartenders edition.

We’ll be sure to share lots of pictures with you from these events on our social media sites. The below picture, from the 71 Brewing Taproom in Dundee was from the recent kick of meeting to discuss requirements for the competition. We are proud to be stocked on the bar here as the guys runs a fantastic brewery and make excellent beers. Our trade tasting event for the first round will be held here in June. Keep an eye out over the summer for news from each round!
